Post Katrina, many who were considering a new car purchase did move away
from gas guzzlers towards more economical vehicles.

The drop in purchases of SUVs was noted by car makers.

Since last year most U.S. automakers have made changes in their product
lines...these may have been in process but the numbers showed them the
necessity for embracing hybrids and fuel efficiency and lessening their
dependence on the large vehicles in their line (for their increased
profit margins...though there is no profit if they don't sell).

Still...with all this, it takes quite a while to make a dent in the
existing fleet on the road.
