Mark, that's funny! You will find - if you haven't already - that meanings change as you travel across country. What often passes for rives in the west are called drain ditches here. I was surprised at what is called a river in Alaska - often called a creek here. Same thing for roads. But for "highway's" in Alaska, I take the que mostly from maps and the likes of "The Milepost". They don't call it 'The Dalton Road" or "The Dempster Road". The only one I know of that has actually been cauled a "Road" is the north slope haul road, and I think that even it has been upgraded to a "highway" by name at least though certainly not by condition. But you are quite right. Most of those "Highways" are roads by any other name, and some are barely that - almost logging trails. Regards. It is really a one to two lane dirt/gravel road through the back country. Services are nonexsistent and some days you can travel it without seeing another vehicle. > > Mark in AK > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: John Bange <jbange@GMAIL.COM> > Date: Monday, May 1, 2006 11:16 am > Subject: Re: High fuel costs threaten Alaska trip NOT! > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > > >>> The scenic Dempster highway north of Dawson, stay below 50 MPH and >>> you won't blow your tires. >>> >> Just curious, what happens above 50mph that blows tires? >> >> Great travelling pics.
