Carbon Canister for the fuel tank vapor recovery system. Helps absorb the fumes will the vehicle is not running. Above idle, a vlave opens to vent the fuel tank to the air filter. Air is purged through the canister and the fumes are burned in the engine.  You should hear the distinctive click of the valve as the throttle is opened.
