Where would I be without all of you helpful Vanagon mentors on this list? I'd be calling VW shops like I used to back in the days before computer! Someone here suggested an extractor socket you tap onto the bolt. I've never needed the extractor tools till now- I wonder how I went all these years without a set. Your suggestions to get some bolt extractors worked. I bought the set at NAPA by Irwin, for only $14.00. This is for removing the three rounded-off torque converter bolts on my 85 Automatic. I had to get the intake runners and plenum off to be able to tap the extractor on snug. They came right off. Now, does anyone know why VW used the wimpy 10mm bolts in the first place? I would like to replace them with 13 mm - I see no reason not to.
