Not to hijack this thread... but for a delightful drive across much of
the country I really enjoy US 82.  Takes you from Alamogordo NM to the
Atlantic on some really great roads.  Seldom a truck or billboard and
the 'big' towns are places like Wichita Falls and Texarkana that you may
enjoy or just enjoy cruising thru.
