Article about the evolution of the subaru boxer. No mention of where they
got the idea..

More interesting that VW gave up on the engine design and subaru has gone on
to prove it was not quite ready for retirement.

Article finishes noting " Subaru is planning to stick with its boxer engines
as the basis of its future models and is currently in the final stages of
developing a diesel boxer motor to meet market demand in Europe where over
50 percent of all new cars are now diesel powered.
