This area (Kansas City) is not just teeming with Vanagons, but if someone from around here is looking for a nice waterboxer engine, I just dropped one out of my '89 Westy.  There wasn't anything wrong with it-- I was losing my workspace and storage space and had a Subaru conversion engine and tranny sitting in the middle of the floor with $2500 in modifications and no where to go.

I did not do a compression test (which would have been smart), but FWIW I was getting about 19 mpg on average and topping up about a pint of oil every 3000 miles. It's as complete as the day I drove it in (minus a few hoses and plus a brain and engine wiring harness), still attached to the transaxle; would sell separately.  Hoping to get $500 for the engine, $200 for transmission.
