As a teenager and young man, I fooled almost exclusively with british convertibles. I bought VWs because they were cheap reliable and easy to fix and resell at a modest profit to buy parts for the unreliable but fun Triumphs and MGs I attempted to drive. It took about fifteen years for me to get out of denial that the german stuff was soooo much better in engineering and quality. I had a relapse in the early 90s when I did a ground up $$$ restoration on an MGA. It was still a piece of crap, and my 90 Vanagon was faster.
