The Auxilary Air Valve functions to introduce additional air to the fuel mixture when the engine from a cold start. I like to compare it to the operation of an automatic choke except instead of being closed when cold, it is open on the air valve. During the warmup of the engine, the air valve closes as 12 volts is applied to the bi-metal in the valve. Ambient temperatures also play as a factor in warm weather, causing the bi-metal to partially or fully close the valve in hot weather. Essentially, the Aux Air Valve is a necessary component for starting in cold to mild weather. Gary Malick from the Type 2 List pmailed saying he uses one from a mid 80s Jetta on his Bus, but there are two different ones, so I've replied back to him with the question of which one he's using. Could be an adequate substitute for the 80-85 Vanagon, but further research is needed, such as testing one on my Westy (always the guinea pig, me).
