Subject:Re: how can you tell 4-speed vs. 5-speed apart outside of the van

The 5 speed tranny is longer than the 4 speed. A simple comparison with
a tape measure will tell them apart. Measure from the shift lever pivot
to the nose mounting face with the 4 studs.

The tranny code stamped on the lower edge can help, assuming the tranny
is in original condition. The case section where VW stamped the
identifying codes is the same for later 4 speeds, 5 speeds, and Syncros,
assuming no diff lock. This case section is often damaged internally and
can get replaced during a rebuild. Then the code shows whatever the
donor tranny was, not what the tranny is now.
