Strange.  I grew up in west Texas (read sand) and now live in northern
Maine (read snow).

My personal experience is that wide, aired down tires, are better in
sand (think camel's foot) and narrow hard tires are better in snow as
they cut through it down to hard surface.  Ice is another story.
