Loren, according to the article they were burning the tires at night for
warmth after having used up all the gas, which would make spotting the smoke
very difficult indeed.

Many people in the big cities have lost touch with the skills needed to
survive in the great wide world beyond the mall.  This list, being rife with
dedicated outdoors types and Vanagon owners, is obviously a hotbed of
anachronistic skillsets.  :)
