Jim, your sock inside the tank is probably full of crud.I took a coat
hanger and stuck lots of holes in the sock my vanagon had.The rust got
through to the filter that way.

When you get your new tank, fill the old with water to remove any fumes.
Then cut it open and take a picute of that sock for us. Nobody has ever
seen it before .It's existance is mythical.
