The stock Vanagon tank does not have a "sock" mesh screen like the old air-cooled VW's. It has a pick-up in the center of the tank that is surrounded by small walls that act as baffles to prevent the fuel from sloshing to one side of the tank during cornering. The center area is about 8" across and has a large area of mesh screen protecting it. Jim, your sock inside the tank is probably full of crud.I took a coat hanger and stuck lots of holes in the sock my vanagon had.The rust got through to the filter that way. When you get your new tank, fill the old with water to remove any fumes. Then cut it open and take a picute of that sock for us. Nobody has ever seen it before .It's existance is mythical.
