I have done a few. I don't see how you could get a new one in without
dropping the tank even if you got the old one out that way. Part of the
cable is a nylon guide block that clips into small bracket welded to the
body. On 2wd models the tank blocks this. No sweat to change the cable
on a Syncro though.

Rare is the part that is easier to service on a Syncro.

You need to pull the filler before you drop the tank. After the 3 screws
come out you rotate the filler hole part a little until it lines up with
some notches in the body. Only then will it come out.
