I have yet to drive a Vanagon with an automatic but will soon enough as the
BLue bus is auto. As far as the manual go - well I prefer manual - but that
has nothing to do with Vanagons that is a preference. I had to replace the
clutch in the 85' and that was not a real fun job but mostly I think because
of my inexperience.

I personally think it all depends on the driver and their preferences - I
can see benefits to both.
