Mark you can turn that 48" into  a 36" by removing the endpiece at the top
of the jack and sawing off the requisite amount of the jack pillar.  Often
seen for sale is a sling type device that is used to raise the vehicle by
the wheel.  Not suitable for changing tires but very handy for digging out
of sand, mud, pig snot.
