I still have my copy of "How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive For the
Compleat Idiot" which I've had since 1973.  In that edition, it shows
how to solder leads to a light bulb and how to use it for static timing.

It's full of really helpful basic mechanical "how-to" information as
well as "how-to" when you don't have the proper tools at hand.

It's a book I highly recommend.
