I've always wondered about that as particularly for taller drivers the rearview mirror is to high to see straight out the back. Unfortunately manufacturers stopped putting in dash-mounted rear-view mirrors because of safety regulations.
I've often wondered if anyone has found a reariew mirror with a longer mount that would replace the stock mirror, or one that could be dash mounted.
For me, the stock rearview mirror blocks a significant portion of my forward vision and offers a poor view out the back.

Does anyone remember the 4 and 5 panel "Wink" mirrors popular in the late '60's and '70s
