It might be noted that this separate drum/hub set up is utilized on all Type 2s & Vanagons from 71 thru 91. Just replaced the brakes on "Gloria" this past week with just removing these bolts and the drum. VW did something right in 71 when they intro'd this method (GM has been doing this for decades). I've changed the rear brakes this way on a 71, 73, 74, 76, 77, 80, 84 & 86 doing it this way for the past 20 years. Keep in mind that this bolt John Rodgers speaks of is actually a 7mm bolt, 22mm long with a 11mm Hex Head (VW # N0102276). Most fasteners are properly identified by the thread diameter, NOT the hex head in the fastener & automotive industry. Something to keep in mind when ordering fasteners from your favorite supplier. -- Jim Thompson 84 GL 1.9 "Gloria" 84 Westfalia 2.1 "Ole Putt" 73 K Ghia Coupe "Denise" 72 411 Station Wagon "Pug" oldvolkshome@gmail.com http://www.oldvolkshome.com *********************************** On 3/23/07, John Rodgers <inua@charter.net> wrote: > > I think every Newby on the list - and maybe some Oldies as well - > should be told ---- > > YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REMOVE THE REAR AXLE NUT TO CHANGE THE REAR BRAKES!! > > That said, here is the reason. > > On the face of the brake drum there is a 14 mm bolt that holds the drum > to the stub axle flange to prevent the drum from coming loose when > changing a tire. <SNIP>
