I have carried four bikes for thousands of miles with a rack (Thule in
my case) that mounts over the luggage rack. Four rails (Rocky Mounts
in my case) that project slightly over the front end. Loved the
system. Fairly quick to load, stable, you can still load the luggage
rack. With that and the awning tube running up the side, my van looks
armed and dangerous.
