Ellen,
On my '87 syncro Westy I've gotten used to just taking the steering wheel
off (takes me 3 minutes, literally), turning the drivers seat around (180)
and sliding it forward (front of van) and voila, the aux bat box is
thoroughly exposed for easy access. Don't know about the earlier-than-'86's.
