Folks, is there anyone in the Portland OR/Vancouver WA area willing to
loan a pair of Westy-strength jackstands in the next week? Perhaps
even a hydraulic jack? Or is there somewhere in Portland I can rent
such items? Three damsels (two humans plus Cunegonde) await your
reply.

I'm spending the week in Portland replacing Cunegonde's waterpump and
(hopefully) diagnosing and repairing the shifter linkage. I understand
the leaky waterpump, but cannot figure out where my 3rd and 4th gears
went while reverse, 1st and 2nd work fine. Both are tasks requiring
jackstands, alternately front and rear. I don't want to carry my
heavy-duty jackstands and truck jack on the train from Seattle!

For anyone willing to lend their vanagon expertise for a few hours, we
promise some of whatever you drink and excellent home-cooked food
and/or smoked salmon.
