Subject:Re: Catastrophic failure of coolant level sensor

Thanks Keith,

Looks like the broken ground at the guage was the problem all along. Don't know why I didn't find it sooner.

The real story is the faulty replacement coolant level sensor that failed like a bottle rocket, leaving the threads in the expansion tank.

The replacement from the dealer looks Superior AND has the right O-ring seal. Had I paid more attention to the clearly smaller O-ring (which immediately leaked) and not tightened it more to stop the leak, perhaps it would not have broken, but I didn't tighten it that tight and when it still leaked I removed it and replaced the O-ring with the right one. . . you get the idea.

I really don't think it was an over tightening problem.

  Beware Bad Parts!

  Steven

Seems to me that my 84 had the same blinky light syndrome several years
ago. I scoured my repair log and could not find the info, but I believe
I had swapped instrument clusters with a known working one. It worked,
so I knew it was something in the instrument circuit. I did replace the
light/gauge, but I also remember putting a new voltage regulator in
there, too (the one in the instrument cluster, not the one on the
alternator). Sorry if that's too vague...
