Turned out that the two bolts holding the air intake manifold to the
driver's side head weren't real tight. I guess some fuel can accumulate
in the manifold and leak out onto the top of the head there even though
the engine hadn't been run in a few days? Anyway, I tightened the bolts
and the top of the head is now as dry as a potato cellar.

Checking the plugs on my 1.9l WBX (how do you easily get to the #1 plug,
anyway?) I noticed a wet gasoline-smelling spot on top of the driver
side cylinder head, under the injectors. The injector bits, including
their undersides, seem to be dry. The bolts holding the intake air
manifold* to the head were not tight. I've tightened them and will see
if things dry up.
The engine has not been run for a few days. Could fuel leak out of an
insufficiently tightened air manifold / head connection while the van is
just sitting?
*I can't find the name for that part in Bentley's p. 24.46. It's the
paired hoses that bring air from the intake air distributor to the heads.
