This retaining ring has a fairly large diameter and is torgued. I maybe wrong. It needs to be removed in order for the gear carrier to be separated from the main case of the transmission. The gear carrier has all the guts on it except the large ring gear. I tend to believe that a manual transmission is easier than a wasserboxer to work on. I don't think my 84 vanagon is worth much more than $1k so I am reluctant to spend that much for a rebuild that may not be much better than the broken one. It's tempting for me to break my two cores loose and see if I can save some money. If I learn anything worthwhile I'll feed it back to the list.
