I think a fire-extinguishing system like in the rally cars will help. In Germany I've found these here: http://www.sandtler.de/katalogangebote/loescher/omp/loeschanlagen/omp_loesch anlagen.htm I've never seen one of these installed in a Vanagon, but I'm sure there is enough space for it.
