Is the 095 for diesel geared low with that "granny gear" or is fifth gear an
overdrive?  Compatible with a non-diesel?

Yours should be a 091/1 transmission shown in the Bentley Manual.
091 transmission is for air cooled. 095 is 5 speed for diesel.
091/1 is for all 1.9 and 2.1 water cooled gas engines.
