Ray VW doesn't have any rights to boxer engines, any more than do DKW, BMW, Ferrari or Porsche. Or Daimler for straight-fours. You can't patent/copyright an engine layout. Subaru's early FF engines (~900-1200cm3), like VW boxers, had 3 main bearings, but that was in the saving search for space, not copying VW. Hmmm.... come to think of it, didn't ALL pushrod Subaru boxers have 3 mains? Anyone know whether or not the EA/ER engines were based on the later pushrod 1.8 (adding OHC heads)? Were they 3/4 or 5/7 main designs? Glad to hear the ER27 hasn't given you any problems... may it keep on so. -- Andrew Grebneff Dunedin New Zealand Fossil preparator <andrew.grebneff@stonebow.otago.ac.nz> Seashell, Macintosh, VW/Toyota van nut
