I guess it partly depends on where you live.

i.e. rust, population. Could be a diff between the U.S. and Canada in
terms of which country saw more of them sent over by Audi.

I've seen them up here in Vancouver B.C. Regardless, I just don't
think they made a lot of them.

On a seperate note, I have seen Fox's for sale (parts) up here. Some
with low km's on them. I had read that the exhaust manifold was
preferable for I4 engine conversion as it "pointed" the right way for
gas I4 engine conversion purposes.

If so.....

Are the engines in the fox useable/desireable as donors for Vanagon I4
engine conversion?

Which engine and FI system was used on these?

Neil.

Lights , exc would come on, but no cranking. Timing belt intact. About 50K miles , and looked it. Maybe less miles.dont remember. Not more than 50k. On ebay for $200. Dont need another VW. so I passed it up. Owning a Fox, I could have told him that the shoulder seat belt needed to be clicked to start the car. One of the pictures in the sale showed that the lap belt had been buckled. Most( including myself ) would have thought that this was enough to get ignition.
