For about $16 you can get a stick on 3rd brake light from JC Whitney.
You're going to have to wire into your brake lights anyway.

BTW, I'm not positive but I don't think the later model Vanagons came with a
3rd light anyway.

I know this is probably a FAQ, and I did a google, but couldn't readily find
the exact following question:

Is there any benefit is using the back hatch off of a
1987 vanagon on a pre-1987 vanagon to utilize the third brake light that was
mandated by US safety laws?

I'm just kind of wondering about this right now.  From a practical
standpoint, if I'm going to repaint the vehicle anyway, would it matter?
Would it fit?

If it doesn't fit, I'm not too worried.  The rear hatch is one of the more
rust-free parts on my camper bus.
