Subject:Re: gear linkage trouble after tranny out and short shift kit

I agree with Dennis, but would like to also add that in Bentley they show a difference in the mounting of the linkage in the later years. This was due to the early 4 speeds and Syncro trannies having a fourth gear issue, popping out and the slider was ok. What I have seen first hand is that the rubber bellows at the linkage mounting point are fully compressed at fourth gear and sometimes push back making it pop out of gear. This is very common when an 86 or 87 Syncro trans is put into a later model Syncro. The VW fix was to shim the mounting plate and trans mount with washers (6.5mm), moving the bellows and not compressing them all the way.

I will p mail you the PDF of the page if you don't have it

On any van that has shown this in fourth gear, a few have been fine after removing the bellows completely.
I am not saying it isn't a cracked 3 - 4 slider, just that I would try the shim and bellows removal before pulling the trans.

Hope this helps.

let me get this straight. a cracked slider hub - isnt that the typical
manual transmission problem that was fixed in later model years? Thing is,
this is a rebuilt unit with about 15k miles on it!
