I can't speak for the rectangular H4 Ciebie e-code headlights, but I will tell that the round 7'' Cibie e-codes are superb to any round DOT headlight I've ever tried, and that includes Sylvania Xtravision.

I run my Cibie lights with relays and 80/100w bulbs.  The low beams are unbelievably smooth and wide, with a nice sharp cutoff.  Even modern vehicles, with notable exceptions of HID systems, come short of that kind of light coverage.

If you do any single upgrade to your Vanagon, it should be tossing out the crappy DOT headlights and installing some good E-codes such as Hella, Bosh or Cibie.
