Has anyone used another method of disabling the engine other than that one
wire?

<<<<<The thing is, there is NO wire in the dash area that has anything
directly to do with the fuel pump and thus what you are asking can't be done
that way. In fact there is only ONE wire in the dash area that connects to
the engine management and that is the wire Dug used.
