Subject:Friday trips again (NVC)

We drove down to Portland this morning and I got to wondering about
Hwy 101. Another nice trip to put on 'the list'.

Near as I can tell Hwy 101 starts in Los Angeles California where Hwy
101 meets I-10 & I-5 and ends where it runs into I-5 at Olympia
Washington. After spending some time with RandMcNally Tripmaker ...
going from Olympia to Los Angeles via hwy 101 is a 1519 mile trip.
It looks like Hwy 101 used to go all the way to Mexico but the part
just south of LA lost the "101" number when it picked up the I-5
name. It's 1661 miles if you follow the 'original 101' all the way to Mexico.

It would be a nice drive from Olympia, up and around the Olympic
peninsula and south down the Pacific ocean side. Through Washington,
across the Columbia River to Astoria and down the Oregon coast. The
coast, Redwoods and forests of northern California. Be some great
camping in that 800 miles.

The next 700 miles would be different (from the first part) and I
have no doubt that it is a worthwhile trip. I've driven all of this
(but not the south of LA part) one time or another but never as "one
trip". It's been a LONG time since I did anything in the LA area so
I'm not the one to comment on camping, tourist stuff, beaches or
anything. Now if someone wants to talk about things to do in the LA
area on a Westy trip down Hwy 101 I'd be more than glad to listen.
