Yes and no, there are many things that can be done to  vanagon to make them
better.
And doing that, and having a van that is not so 'new tech' that you can't do
anything with it, is part of the fun !
  At least these are new enough tech, but not too new, that we CAN play with
them and improve them.

Seems like this is the easiest practical solution. It also gives you the
reminder, "Hey, I'm driving an old VW bus!" Which is what it's all about
anyway. If we wanted Aerostars we would have them.
