What wonderful idea as compared to adding switches and other good stuff. Yep, just crack the throttle. I also do this on my Diesel motor home as it will also over cool going down long grades. And there is no actual throttle there. Only fuel is regulated so going down those hills the full engines capacity of air with no combustion cools it down really quick. There is the advantage though that this quickly gets rid of that extra heat generated going up the hill. I don't know if it is related but the only two times I've experienced Vanagon Syndrome has been after coasting down to the bottom of long long grades. I would hit the throttle at the bottom and nothing would happen - just sputtering. I'd pull over, stop the engine, restart and all would be OK. FWIW - this is the only problem I've ever had with this van after four years and twenty thousand or so miles. My "cure" has been to modulate the throttle as I coast down any long hill in my automatic '87 Westy. I haven't experienced the syndrome since.
