Hello List, A good friend of mine purchased his first Vanagon last week. He bought an 85 gl passenger van with a manual transmission. After driving up the state of Mississippi on his way to his home in Memphis TN his transmission stopped working. I am going to phone him to talk through some trouble shooting proceedures but wanted to contact the list on two points. First does anyone on the list have a lead on a good and hopefully cheap manual transmission in the case that his proves faulty. Second does anyone have any suggestions or experience with the symptoms that he describes as: ".....stopped at a red light was taking off .....think i was in about 2 or 3rd gear...and it seemed to have jumped out of gear.....i clutched it......to find that the gears were no longer there....so i coasted to the high school where it still sits......i tried going into every gear....but they don't seem to be there....i can even crank it and shift through the gear pattern with no clutch pushed in....it doesn't grind.....i checked the linkage up to the tranny housing.......its all fine.....climbed under and shifted it by hand.....so its something inside the housing......any ideas as to what it could be?..." Thanks as usual,, Jonathan Poole '83 AC Westy
