Thanks to Helmut Zeidler, you can compare
all the transmission ratios by looking at his web page
<http://volksweb.relitech.com/helmut/GEARBOX.HTM>

I can't say if there is any difference in installing the 2wd vs syncro
transmission. My 5spd only needed a new front transmission mount to
install.
I got my transmission from Vanagain.com. I have seen these come up for
sale by the list vendors now and then.

Anyway, the 5speed with an overdrive 5th really makes for a nice
transmission. No more hunting between 3rd and 4th when going up hills,
and freeway cruising at about 500 rpm from the 4 speed.
I also added the syncro dash parts and diff-lock knob. It was a

You should also replace the 4spd shift linkage.
I have a parts list if you are interested.
P.S. it is not an inexpensive conversion.
I did have the transmission regeared so 5th is and OD - so that cuts my
freeway
rpm significantly and ups the MPG by about 1mpg.
