I've had the same thought -- that socket is for a "rear fog" light,
which is a brighter-than-normal additional red tail light.  If used
for that purpose, it should only have a lamp on the driver's side so
as not to be confused with brake lights.

But fitting additional tail lights there is something I've
considered... the stock tail lights are pretty small relative to the
size of the vehicle...
