thanks for all of the great feedback...i got some fabulous advice and will be going with a new assembly.  while the cash aspect is important, time is even more crucial(wife, who gives "the look" when she finds out how much i am spending to keep the van going, and two sons under 5 make it so).  globbing grease and 16? bolts is a lot quicker.  i try to use german parts when able, but at present i will have to be satisfied with what i can do.
