Are there any secret tips/tricks to cleaning a very dirty pop top or is it just a matter of climbing a ladder and using a brush and soapy water?

Also, what type of paint works best to cover the stains (This is for when I'm too tired to continue scrubbing or after I recover from me broken leg!)?
