Oops...I forgot to put subject in my last post. -----Original Message----- From: Vanagon Mailing List [mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com] On Behalf Of Giasson, Pascal (DNR/MRN) Sent: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 9:13 AM To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM Subject: I have been working on rebuilding the top end of my 1.9 since last June (on and off obviously). Because of the length of time the motor has been open, I decided to try and clean any dust that may have got in there by spraying the inside of the case with kerosene as per the Muire How to Keep your VW Alive Idiot Book. Some hard, brittle, black chunks came out of the oil drain hole (case sealant? valve cover gasket sealant?), and a few black silicone bits. Is this stuff "normal" to be in the sump of a 150K motor? Should I be "anal" about trying to get every last piece out? I already used about 3 litters of kerosene and I think I got most of it out but I'm sure there are still some bits in there. My motor ran fine before I took it apart. Thanks Pascal '84 Westy
