Work on the "cute" and practical angles. Take her on a surprise picnic
when the weather is better to show off how cute and practical the
Vanagon is. Don't mention the subject again.

Then....

A week or so after that, promise to drink less, smoke less, etc., (if
you do either. If not, make something up) Don't say why. She will
assume you're helping to save money to put toward the household
budget. Then......

Get the money, put it into the Vanagon.

Then start drinking beer or ____ again!

You will have your cake and eat it too!

The plan is fool-proof I tell's ya! Fool-proof!
