Subject:Re: something to consider ...

This came up at Road & Track magazine, and they called a bunch of tire
companies to ask them.
Forget what they came up with, but I'd say 10 years is a practical life
limit, and 15 is really pushing it.

I hate seeing a 'new tire' for a spare too, unless there's 5 matching new
tires on the van - but a 'perfectly new' spare tire is a waste of a good
tire to me. I prefer a 'very reliable' tire that's not too old, and not
brand new in terms of tread depth.

The environment where the tire is is a factor too.
A nice cool dry basement is good.
Stored in a hot loft, or under the car high summer temps a lot, is not so
good.
