I recently took a 1300 mile vacation in my Westy (sounds funny..) and
calculated the cost of gas into my total expense.  Even at $4 per gallon
total fuel cost was not outrageous at $300.  As a contrast I spent only $145
on campgrounds.

Had gas been $1.75 a gallon I would have made it a 2500 mile vacation.

I'd say for every Westy owner dumping their camper due to high fuel costs
there will be a willing buyer who just dumped their gas-sucking RV.
