Subject:Can Anyone Identify This "Thing"?
From:Paul Connelly

Hi Volks,

Okay don't laugh... well maybe a little!

This is my first vanagon, so I've never really seen in and around the engine
bay before and being a WBX it looks nothing like what I am used to engines
looking like! Anyway, whilst messing around with the radiator fan motor
yesterday (thanks to all), I came across some wires that were just hanging
around and not terminated. One was a ribbon type cable and looked out of
place on the van. Well I stripped them out today, and find that they are
connected to this "Thing" that I had assumed served some useful purpose back
in the engine bay, mounted on the LHS on the sidewall.

Well I would like to remove said "Thing", but I'm not sure what to do with
the two "lines" that are somehow connected into the van. One runs forward
between the gearbox and the gas tank and disappears. The second tee's off
into a pipe running from the intake manifold forward (sorry not sure what it
does). When I start the motor with it disconnected it creates a vacuum on
that line

I've posted some pics of the thing to a spare page on my website here: The
Thing - http://tinyurl.com/6dlp4d

It also had a wire connected to the feed to the coil.

TIA,

Paul
