Had this happen to my van. Kept it for a short while longer. One cold
morning, the friction
came completely off. Found out when I hit the brakes. Got a loud BANG!
Then it was followed
by an occasional thumping. After dissembly, it was obvious that the shoes
had come "unglued."

I'd dump the bad shoes and get new ones. Better safe than sorry. They will
only get worse.
