Searching the archives with google "doesn't work".  Google, for whatever
reason, doesn't completely index the archives.  If you don't believe me, try
searching at the link you gave for the terms:
rockland maine

It won't find this message:

As far as I can tell, the majority of messages are actually not indexed by
google.

The best thing I've come up with is to do what the original poster was
trying to do: search by email.  But the address for searching is
listserv@gerry.vanagon.com, not vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com
