Just to add to the confusion, two separate parts are being discussed here -
valve covers and push-rod tube shields. I believe the original question
involved the push-rod tube shield, where adding an access hole or modifying
the exhaust nut mount is a useful mod.
Adding holes to the valve covers is not!
